The Women’s Bean Project offers women from backgrounds of chronic unemployment and poverty a temporary job in gourmet food manufacturing and jewelry production. The program provides immediate income, coordinates support services for participants to overcome barriers to employment, and teaches the job readiness skills needed to get and keep a job.
Our mission is to change women’s lives by providing stepping stones to self-sufficiency through social enterprise. We aim to affect the world at large through our products, processes and beliefs.
Since 1989, the organization has helped more than 18,000 mothers, children, grandparents and friends make and sustain positive differences in their lives.
Today, program participants develop the work and interpersonal skills needed to function independently in the workplace and community. Most women are single mothers and have been on public assistance for many years. The majority of them do not have a GED or high school diploma. Many are recovering from experiences with substance abuse and incarceration.
Women’s Bean Project opens the door into a world that most of the women served were unaware even existed. By learning basic job readiness skills, such as a positive attitude, reliability, accuracy, and accountability, our graduates go on to lead successful, self-sufficient and fulfilling lives. The essential skills gained during their stay empower them to create better lives for themselves and their families, gain a sense of hope, and contribute to a stronger community.
The sale of our products supports the women’s employment during their time at Women’s Bean Project; however, we rely on donations to provide the life skills classes and other program activities necessary to help these women truly affect change in their lives.
