Success Skills presented by Staples

Caroline Turner: Beyond Gender: Using Masculine and Feminine in Work and Life

www.athenagroup.biz

Successful women sometimes became that way by conforming inside cultures that were created by men and by emulating the leadership styles of men.  Authentic leadership requires that we know our own natural preferences for how to work and lead, whether that is masculine, feminine or a mix.  Effective leadership today requires the use of both masculine and feminine approaches—and the knowledge of when each works best.  This workshop is designed to help participants understand and appreciate feminine ways of working, know their own preferences on a “gender continuum,” and identify ways to operate on more of that continuum.

Participants will:

1. Learn the physiological and cultural influencers on what is defined as “feminine” vs. “masculine”

2. Gain new understanding and appreciation of feminine ways of working and leading

3. Understand their personal preferences on the gender continuum and practice using more of the continuum for personal success

Char Bloom

Introduction to Fly Fishing

www.charbloom.com

Did you ever wish you could cast away your cares….ever want to net a dream?  You can do these things when you step into a river or lake with a fly rod in your hand and a desire to look into the eye of a beautiful rainbow trout.  During the two and a half hour introductory clinic, you’ll learn how to tie on a fly, identify aquatic life and cast your line.  When you catch your first fish, you’ll both be hooked. A more advanced class may be offered on Friday morning for those who want to learn more or work on technique.

Bio

My first job was on MGM’s ship the HMS Bounty.  Next, I logged approximately six million miles flying around the world as a flight attendant for Trans World Airlines. I was fortunate enough to be chosen to work publicity events for them as well.  I have taught skiing and snowboarding for 18 years.  Ten years ago, I developed a huge passion for fly fishing.  In the following years, I became a certified casting instructor, guide and member of Hyde Boat’s Pro Staff…one of only four in the world.  I design, manufacture and sell women’s fly fishing clothing.  I have always found incredible peace and inspiration in the outdoors and feel fortunate that I live life with a great deal of adventure.  I can’t imagine it any other way.

My teaching, whether on the snow or in a river, benefits the Denver Rescue Mission’s Champa House, a transitional housing facility for women and children.  I donate 100% of my income to these disadvantaged women who are trying very hard to build better lives.  I truly believe that the best thing I can do in my life is share my blessings. Magically, I receive far more than I could ever give.

Bio

Berith Jacobsen has founded four businesses and one non-profit over 25 years.  As a “serial entrepreneur”, her first business in 1981, was an imprinted sportswear company in Boulder, Colorado..  Her second venture was in 1984 when Berith designed the very first laptop computer case and briefcase combined called a Berithcase™.  As a result of this design, her company became the largest custom carrying case manufacturer to the top 10 computer manufacturers, i.e. from A to Z, Apple to Zenith!

After selling her business, she 'retired' for one year and learned the game of golf.  In 1994, she founded her 3rd company, TEAM 2000, a sports luggage & leather goods mfr., imprinted sportswear supplier and promotional products distributor to the golf industry.  In this same year, she founded the Denver chapter of the Executive Women's Golf Association and served two years on the national board of directors.  Her first, established golf handicap was a 19.1 and today, she carries between an 8.5 -12 handicap, depending on whether or not she is speaking to her putter!   In 2004, Berith competed with 2,269 EWGA Members to advance to EWGA's National Championship in Nashville, TN, where she won 3rd place, Low Net in the Championship Flight.  Her best round of golf to date is a 76 on a Par 72 course, shot in October of 2005.  In 2006, after selling TEAM 2000, Berith founded TEAM THINK, a product design & development company.  She has continued to work on growing the game of golf, especially with the women's segment and the Executive Women's Golf Association.  Her favorite saying is, "You are far better off to have tried something and failed than to have tried nothing and succeeded!"

Bio

Penny McDonald, LCSW, EAP II and Kelly Evans, M.A., NCC, EAP II

Adventure:  Equine Assisted Learning

www.stableconnections.org

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy & Learning (EAP/L) incorporates horses as a tool for emotional growth and learning. It is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working with the clients and horses to address learning goals.  EAP/L is an experiential modality. This means that participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors, and patterns.

Horses are very much like humans in that they are social animals. They have defined roles in their herds. Because of their ability to live in the present, horses do not have labels and past judgments to bias how they respond to participants. Horses respond to what participants give them in the moment, where as humans, we tend to let biases cloud our lens. Horses are much more effective at confronting behaviors and attitudes as a result of this non-judgmental, non-verbal, and honest response. They respond to everything participants think and do. Each of these responses gives Campers information – information that brings awareness of current patterns and motivates change to new ones.

Horses are large and powerful, which creates a natural opportunity to overcome fear and develop confidence. The size and power of the horse are naturally intimidating to many people. Accomplishing a task involving the horse, in spite of those fears, creates confidence and provides for wonderful metaphors when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life. Even those who are familiar with horses are surprised at what they discover about themselves using this model.

Campers who experience the EAP/L adventure will be challenged through ground exercises involving horses with regard to the theme “You will do amazing things.” We will work in groups of 8-10 campers along with the horses exploring obstacles that interfere with their personal or business goals. Campers will formulate clear strategies and solutions to overcome these obstacles in order to achieve their life goals. (Please note: EAP/L is not horseback riding.)

Due to the limited spots for this activity, Stable Connections will also offer Campers three additional off-site adventures located in Evergreen for up to 10 women per adventure.  These sign up slots will be available at Camp.

CAUTION:  Equine activities are highly active and participatory. Improper use of the activities described herein may result in injury. Neither Stable Connections, CampExperience nor Copper Mountain assume any liability for loss or damage, direct or consequential, to the participants.

Kelly Evans, M.A., NCC, EAP II

In 2005 Kelly graduated with honors from Denver Seminary with a degree in counseling and integrates theology with psychology to address the whole person: mind, body and soul.  She has a private practice in Evergreen where she works with adolescents and their families, individuals and couples around emotional health issues.

Recognizing the limitations of traditional psychotherapy, Kelly pursued training and certification through the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association (Eagala) in order to provide an experiential form of therapy to her clients. Stable Connections was formed with co-founder Penny McDonald and together, using the team approach, they offer an experiential form of therapy and learning using horses. Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and Learning (EAP/L) is a Solutions Focused form of therapy that promotes self-awareness and highlights patterns of behavior that may interfere with resolving life situations and difficulties. Kelly received her Level II certification in EAP/L and offers private sessions, workshops and seminars that are specifically designed to address the needs of individuals, couples, families, corporations and other groups in an accelerated, challenging and supportive environment.

In addition to being a Nationally Certified Counselor, Kelly is a certified PREP (Prevention Relationship Enhancement Program) instructor. She teaches couples how to manage conflict, increase communication, problem solve and enhance their relationship. Kelly serves on the Board of Rockland Fellows and teaches Spiritual and Leadership Formation to graduate students in the Fellows program.

Penny has been involved with horses for many years. Stable Connections is located on her property and her five horses as well as one of Kelly’s’ are a vital part of the business.

Her training with EAGALA has allowed her to combine her expertise as a therapist with her horse experience to bring an exciting new concept to help people deal with issues and challenges. The horses themselves enrich the experience for people as they learn about self and others. She and her partner, Kelly provide individual and family therapy as well as group and corporate workshops using equine assisted therapy and learning. Her experience has shown that the horses have a strong impact on clients helping them find solutions to everyday issues. The horses highlight the client’s issues, and then challenge them to find new solutions. Penny and her husband live on their small ranch in Evergreen, Co

I am Colorado Native, and I graduated from Plateau Valley High School - never heard of it?  Not many people have being that it was in a graduating class of 21. (Where else could you play basketball, go change and be a cheerleader for the boys basketball team?)  I moved from the small town of Mesa to Fort Collins to enjoy college life and graduated from CSU with a degree in Economics.

After graduation and marriage, I moved to California and worked in the marketing department of Meyer; the worlds third largest cookware producer.  I wanted to move back to Colorado.

Three kids later here I am blessed to be a part of CampExperience and to not only help Donahue, but to be able to spend my days with my three boys.  I love going for hikes, snowboarding, rollerblading, walking, listening to music, going to concerts, going to the mountains with my boys and experiencing life through their eyes!
