The Camp Experience

Laurie S Kahn

Like my book, SLEEPAWAY: The Girls of Summer and The Camps They Love, my keynote is a celebration of girls' camps and the unique and enduring role they play in helping to create competent, confident girls and women.

The sense of community that girls are afforded at camp provides the opportunity for them to get in touch with their authentic selves and to find their inner voice and compass, something that often eludes them at home and in school. No concern for 'How do I look?' or 'Are the boys watching?' is an environmental sea change for most girls. The surprising part of the 1100 interviews I conducted was hearing that those who attended girls' camps in the 1920s and '30's and '40's and '50's experienced the same female bonding adventure as girls who were at camp ten years ago or even last summer.

The Power of BIG IDEAS:  The Making of CampExperience

Betsy Wiersma

How did all these amazing women and breakthrough topics come together in the first-ever CampExperience?  What was the path to this summit of education, inspiration and the motivation to change our lives?  What is the secret of birthing my own BIG IDEA?
Hear the real behind the scenes story from Camp creator Betsy Wiersma and understand the power of your own ideas, and key techniques to make them WOW!

Betsy will return in 2007 as Camp Director and founder

Light  A Single Candle

LeAnn Thieman, CSP

100 little babies lay three and four to a cardboard box, strapped in the belly of a gutted cargo jet. Saigon was falling to the communists - - and LeAnn Thieman was caught up in the Vietnam Orphan Airlift.

Recounting her dramatic experiences from the Vietnam Orphan Airlift, LeAnn shares life-changing lessons for coping in our "war zones" today. This poignant, yet humorous, presentation motivates audiences to balance their lives, truly live their priorities, and make a difference in the world. A sign above a pediatric burn unit in Vietnam read,  It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness. LeAnn inspires audiences and honors them for lighting their candles of caring.

LeAnn will return in 2007 for a breakout workshop

Inviting the Muse!  An Interactive Experience to Ignite our Creative Spirit

Ayn Fox, MCC, M.Ed

Grown out of Greek Mythology, the idea of a Muse has become a symbol of inspiration for our creativity.   Ayn has identified nine internal Muses that you will be interacting with at this session and throughout the conference.  The Muses will become metaphorical “girl friends,” encouraging you to apply powerful attitudes and tools to personal and work challenges.  This powerful hands-on exercise is an opportunity to gain personal insight as well as to learn about each other in deeper and more funs ways than at a typical networking event. Come prepared to be energized, inspired and amazed at the creativity available within your self and within each other.  Participants will:

  • Learn specific tools/methods to enhance individual and team creativity
  • Deepen the conversation with themselves and each other at Camp Experience.
  • Have a memorable, energizing experience

Kriss Wittmann

Visual Recording: Interactive Camp Map Activity
