We Need Your Help and Your Vote
Amendment 46 – Discrimination and Preferential Treatment by Governments
The proposed Amendment 46 would alter the Colorado Constitution as it relates to civil rights. This would result in an unfavorable precedent, eroding affirmative action and diversity practices that are important and valid concepts for business and the structure of our society. This would cause our colleges and universities to worry about being sued for any program that seeks to increase diversity, or encourage women or minorities to pursue fields in which they are currently under-represented. If Amendment 46 is passed, any public program that aims to increase opportunities for women and minorities in education or business, including recruitment, training, and outreach would potentially be eliminated. Specifically, it would eliminate:
Programs that help women achieve equal pay for work
Educational scholarships and financial aid for women and minorities
State and local government's ability to decide their hiring and contracting policies
Housing and lending programs that make sure women and minorities are treated fairly without discrimination when applying for home loans and mortgages
Ward Connerly, a California Millionaire, is campaigning for enactment of Amendment 46 in Colorado on the November 2008 ballot which would eliminate equal opportunity programs for women and minorities. His ballot initiative language is deceptive and has misled voters into passing legislation that eliminates equal opportunity programs while believing they are voting for eliminating discrimination. Similar proposals in other states such as California, Michigan and Washington have had serious consequences.
